I promise I won't be just doing DC Digital First book reviews, but they have just been so much fun to read during quarantine. Yes, the stories are pretty quick and straightforward, but they remind me of the magic that was in the issues I read as a kid that were the same. Also, the cover and preview hooked me... Wonder Woman maybe fighting a Yeti? Yes.. very much down for that! So, here we go. As always SPOILERS ahead! Feed Me
What I loved about this issue, is that it really provided a great taste of what Wonder Woman is all about: peace and hope. However, if those things can't be reached, she's also not afraid to kick some butt in the process. So, if this was the only shot you had to understand Wonder Woman... this short 99 cent issue, gives you all you need. Great job to Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti for delivering that in this issue. We start off with Lois on the trail of a group of female hikers who were lost on the K2 mountain (a real mountain in Asia) after an earthquake. Of course, on her way there, her plane crashes and she is marooned on the same summit as the hikers she is searching for. Her only hope? Nope, not Superman (he is off world). Wonder Woman just happened to be on the same continent when she heard the news and headed to K2 to help. Lois thinks she has found one of the hikers. The hiker lures her into a cave. Turns out it isn't a hiker but, but an ancient monster (no Yeti, but a pretty cook Wendigo looking creature) that was set free after the earthquake. Shan Xiao, the monster, is pretty hangry after being cooped up for the past few thousand years. After eating one of the hikers and strung up the others, he has his sights set on Lois being his next course. Of course, in the nick of time, Wonder Woman shows up to fight the beast. In classic Wonder Woman fashion, she tries to reason with the beast and give him a another path besides eating everyone. He not so politely declines. Hey, Diana gave him a chance. After some good old fashioned beast battling, Diana takes him to space where he can't use the earth to power him. Doing this, frees the thousands of souls he had eaten... even the one hiker. Things wrap up with Lois and Wonder Woman eating and talking about what they just endured. Lois had talked to the dead hiker's mother and how she knew her daughter had died in peace. Then Wonder Woman finishes up with talking about faith and the bond between mother and daughter... again, classic Wonder Woman! Daniel Sampere was great on the art. The beast was scary and the action was awesome. I've been a fan of Amanda and Jimmy since their Harley Quinn run. One thing for sure, is they get these characters. They get their motivation, what drives them, and how to put that on the page. If you want your kids (at least 10 or older) to see a badass woman doing the right thing. This book will do it. Looks like Wonder Woman Wednesdays will be a thing now! Pick it up at READ DC. 4.5 out of 5 stars. -CBD
