There's no doubt about it... Shazam is a hit. Fans are loving the tone and heart of the latest DCEU flick. There are lots of characters throughout DC Comics that have stories to tell on the big screen, and they aren't all dark and broody.
Now that Shazam has shown that fans will head out to the theaters to see a lesser known DC hero if the right story is told, what other characters should DC fast track? Here is a few to consider:
It is time for the characters to exist like they do in the comics, independently in the same universe. Warner Bros does not have to follow the Marvel model where every movie has to build to the next. Let directors have fun telling unique, independent stories that have nods to a connected universe. Shazam has opened the door for a lot of fun to be had by fans and a lot of money to be made by the studios. Now lets hope they capitalize on it! -CBD

This week was a bit of a wheel spin as what comic to pick to review. Yes, there are a few books that subscribe to, but I don't think you want to hear me talk week in and week out about the handful of books I'm reading. This week's pick was a fun one... Harley Quinn, aliens, laser guns, and some trippy hallucinations? Yes please.
American Death Machine Looks like this issue picks up in the middle of the Trials of Harley Quinn story. Seems like the Lords of Chaos and Order have selected Harley (for some reason) to put here through some tests to see if she can be an angel of retribution. Harley heads to STAR Labs to try to find a cure for her mother's cancer. She heads in after hours only to find a horde of aliens have broken free thus trapping her inside in an effort to contain the invasion. So, Harley finds some laser guns and blasts her way though this issue. At one point Harley even runs into Joker, Batman, and her mom running through STAR Labs. However, they aren't real. They are hallucinations to test her by the Lords of Chaos and Order. This is revealed by Mirand'r (who I thought was Starfire wearing hotpants) who seems to be somewhat of a herald for the Lords of Chaos and Order. However, Harley makes it to the control room to find a giant squid-like alien with other variations of Harley asking for her help. She ends up setting the alien free and thus passing another trial. The issue wraps up with Enchantress popping up in an alley in Gotham speaking of the revenge she will have on mankind with of course... Harley Quinn being her secret weapon! This is had great art and some solid jokes... things I expect from a Harley Quinn comic. There were some great spreads of pure alien annihilation. At one point she is standing on a pile of dead aliens and screams "I'm and American Death Machine! Raaaagh!" Not being a regular reader, I was not quite sure if some of the monologue from Harley was her breaking the 4th wall and talking to the reader ala Deadpool or is she just crazy and talks out loud. I am hoping for the former. This issue did make me wonder what happened with her and Joker's relationship and why her Batman seem to be on good terms. I will for sure be picking up some trades to see what else our psychotic little friend has been up to. All in all it was a fun ride and a decent jumping on point even though it is in the middle of an arch. If you love Harley Quinn, you'll love this book. Give it a read! -CBD |
