At our house… we love Teen Titans. I know this may be taboo, but Teen Titans Go in particular. My daughter is 6 and loves herself some Starfire and Raven. So, naturally we had to review Titans: Burning Rage.
We have really loved all the Walmart specials that DC has put out. This being another one… Superman: Up in the Sky has been fantastic if you haven’t picked it up yet. Check out our review of number one HERE. It’s great that DC didn’t water down these stories. They have been good old fashion DC fun written and drawn by some stellar creators. Anyway, let’s get on with the review. As always… spoilers ahead! Hey Pizza! Dan Jurgens put this story together for us and I think really captured all the elements of what makes everyone love Teen Titans. The book opens up with Beast Boy (as a gorilla) delivering pizza to the Titans Tower only to find out all the Titans are MIA. Then in an instant, Raven grabs him to teleport to a battle the other Titans are having with Disruptor. Lots of comic book battle greatness as the Titans’ powers are diffused by the Disruptor. He is out to steal a power amplifier to boost his abilities to be unstoppable and all the other reasons bad guys steal something like this. However, the Titans prevail, but the Disruptor escaped. Fast forward to find out that the Disruptor was out to prove himself worthy of the HIVE. Having actually taken the amplifier, he teams up with the Fearsome Five (Gizmo, Mammoth, Shimmer, and Psimon) to set out to dastardly things. Back at Titans Tower, Tim Drake gives us a team roster run down and powers as they go through a little training montage. Of course, the night ends with going out to Big Belly Burger and grubbing down on a rooftop. Disruptor interrupts dinner with what seems to be him attacking a city bus full of people. After Beast Boy turns into a woolly mammoth to stop the bus… we find out that the bus is actually filled with the Fearsome Five! Dun dun duuuun! Nice little cliffhanger for the next issue titled “Dead Reckoning.” Like I said before, lots of classic Titan action with blasters from Starfire, Raven teleporting all over, Beast Boy turning into a dinosaur, and of course Robin being the fearless leader of them all. Selfishly I wish they would have added another Titans to the roster. Not sure why they couldn’t work Cyborg into it. However, the team did not feel incomplete at all with the four members. Scot Easton art was great… again, the word that keeps coming to mind is classic. His art was solid comic book style. If you are a fan of Teen Titans, like me, you will love this book. For me… the more recent iterations are getting a little too odd with rosters that don’t really make sense to me. So, this series hits all the notes I want in a Titans book. Read it! -CBD

Greetings from the recliner! School is starting, football season is near, and kids sports is about to pick back up. Dadding season will be in full swing... Personally, I am pumped for it. Cookouts, carpools, and soccer practice. I will be putting some miles on my Crocs for sure!
Anyway... fun one today. Berserker Unbound #1. Think Conan meets Coming to America, with a sprinkling of Son of Zorn (minus all the comedy). Lots of barbarian violence in this one friends. Anyway, on the with review... and as always spoilers ahead! King of the Mongrels New Character Alert! Yep, Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato Jr have delivered an original character to us in this issue. Yes, hes a classic barbarian type, but I have a hunch there will a few more layers to him upcoming. Things open up to our hero trekking home. We get a glimpse of where hes been and where hes going. Hes been fighting in the Kingdom of the Mist where it sounds like he killed lots of people. Now though, hes headed home to see the one thing he fights for, according to him, his family... a wife and young daughter. But sadly.... as he crests the ridge, they gone. Yep, killed. Seems like the Kingdom of the Mist is back for revenge. A bloody battle ensues full of beheadings, arrows, and bloody axes. Injured, and with more hordes on the way, Berserker heads off to hide in a cave followed by some creepy shaman character. Then, things get interesting. As heads deeper and deeper into the cave rune markings begin to illuminate around him, follow him and send him plummeting into a large opening surrounded by what seems to be portals. With nothing to lose and fearing the Mist is on his tail he goes into a portal. Thinking he was sending himself to Hell, he ends up somewhere else... our world. Specifically being poked by a homeless man with a stick on what seems to be the outskirts of New York City. I believe our hero's journey is just about to begin... I love Jeff Lemire... this is the man who gave us Black Hammer after all. While I was hoping for a little bit more of Berserker in our world in this issue, I trust that he will deliver a solid story to us. Now lets talk about Mike Deodato Jr.... to be honest, I wasn't familiar with his name before this, but man... the art is fantastic! I did have to look up his previous work. Lots of greatness. Give it a google. This first issue is 100% origin and set up. I will for sure give it a 3 issue try and I recommend you do as well. This story has huge potential... pick it up! -CBD |
