Once again SDCC did not disappoint. So much happened, it will take weeks to really digest everything that was announced. So here are some of my takeaways on some of the big stuff that dropped. Enjoy!
Marvel Marvel was the big winner of Comic Con this year. The biggest thing obviously is the announcement of all the Phase 4 titles following the Infinity Saga.
Lots of it we saw coming... The Eternals, Black Widow, as well as the previously announced Disney+ titles. The biggest surprise for me was not just Thor 4 titled "Love and Thunder" but when Natalie Portman showed up to wield Mjolnir. Of course the announcement of Blade coming to the MCU starring Mahershala Ali was big. No date announced for that one yet.
Pappa Kev also let us know that the Fantastic Four are coming to the MCU and X-Men. He had not details to give but did confirm they were coming. I am excited to see a horror take on Doctor Strange most I think of all of these. One thing that I am interested to see is how Marvel pulls off another one by making us care about the Eternals. They did that once with Guardians of the Galaxy. To be honest... I couldn't name one character in the Eternals.... but, if I was a betting man, I think they'll pull it off just fine. DC After seeing everything that Marvel announced, its easy to see why DC chose to sit this one out. However there was some great drops (although nothing too major) following all the mayhem from Marvel for DC stans to drool over. Just about all of it involving TV properties.
I think the biggest win was that it seems like DC Universe still has some life. Young Justice Season 4, Doom Patrol season 2, and Titans season 2 date were announced. Also, we got to see a new look at the upcoming Harley Quinn series.
We got some trailers for the upcoming CW slate. The trailer for the last season of Arrow gave me all the feels! The Arrowverse will be very hallow without it moving forward. I will say though people will be excited to see Brandon Routh as what looks to be Kingdom Come Superman! Other Stuff We got another Watchmen trailer which looks pretty promising. We even got a look at Dr. Manhattan himself! In comic book news... It is called comic con after all: One comic book announcement that caught my attention was the announcement that John Carpenter would be co-writing a Joker book with Anthony Burch. Look for that book to be out in October. Also, we are getting an Adam Strange series from Tom King and Mitch Gerard series. I have a feeling they'll have another hit on their a la Mister Miracle. Again, we will be sorting through all the announcements and panels for the next couple weeks. For now, though, we've got lots of greatness to take in... -CBD

I do love Superman. It’s amazing to me that the original superhero who has been around for 80+ years can still have new and original adventures. This one written by Tom King, sets up what looks like yet another interesting twist on Big Blue.
This series was a part of a Walmart exclusive release that most comic fans weren’t too happy about because it wasn’t always easy to find. I never tried to hunt them down, because I was holding out hope that DC would release them in this format… my patience paid off. I do applaud DC though for doing these books at Walmart. In a world where comic shops are closing and the big bookstores aren’t carrying single issues anymore, any way you can put comics in front of more people… I am all for. Anyway… onto the review. As always, spoilers ahead. Up in the Sky The book opens up with Batman reaching out to Superman about a missing girl. Batman tells him about a foster girl named Alice who was kidnapped, her foster parents murdered, two of her foster sisters murdered, and the other sister shot but alive at the hospital. Batman asks that Supes talks to her. We find out that besides it being a horrible crime, the girl’s abductor was wearing a spaceman suit and takes off with Alice… up in the sky. Superman enlists the help of the Green Lantern Corp to help, but doesn’t sound too hopeful. The next bit you see him doing all the things Superman does: fighting a dinosaur running loose in Metropolis, stopping an asteroid, saving a plane, fighting bad guys, and saving innocent people. All to show what he means to everyone as Earth’s protector. Batman says he should go look for the girl, but he has responsibilities. After a greatly written spread with Clark and his dad, it seems he might be leaning to going after the girl. Kids have hope, and wherever she is… she has hope that Superman will save her (he’s her favorite). Batman lets Superman know that the girl he visited in the hospital took a turn for the worse and passed away. That seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Again, another great page where Superman tells Lois that he is going to find the girl. Lois tells him she will do her best not to fall off any buildings while he’s gone. It closes with him headed to Rann. The abductor used a counterfeit Zeta beam to disappear with the girl. So, the scientist on Rann he is talking to is going to upload the Zeta beam data straight into Superman’s head to try to figure out where the girl might be, which should kill him. After a series of visions that has him at the Fortress of Solitude, the Daily Planet, fighting Doomsday, and talking to Wonder Woman, he figures out that the girl was taken to the Bodes Galaxy. He then takes off to save a little girl… who is waiting for him. What a great start… Tom King again, does not disappoint. I have always been a fan of Andy Kubert since Flashpoint. I think Tom did a great job of the often-used Christ imagery with Superman. However, I can’t think of a story that used the parable of the lost sheep paralleled to Superman quite like this. Andy killed it with these panels. The art was poster material. All in all the book was engaging and showed not only the scope and power of Superman, but his heart as well. Any Superman story that call pull that off, is one that will hook me every time. Pick this book up. -CBD |
