A little confession here... I love Riverdale on the CW. I know its a glorified, unrealistic, soap opera. However, its done well enough to keep us coming back for more (yes, my wife and I watch it together). So, I have been exploring some of the Archie Comics since watching the show. The Archie Horror-verse interests me the most. I will admit Jughead: The Hunger is pretty awesome!
I feel like Cheryl Blossom is a little underutilized on the show currently. So, when I heard they were making a series about Jason and Cheryl potentially being the Antichrist, I had to check it out. As always, these review contain SPOILERS. So, here we go! Truth or Dare Things get started in the halls of Riverdale High. We head down the hall past a few of the pillars of Archie Comics: Betty and Veronica and then Archie and Jughead. The talk around school is the party that the Blossoms are having that night and who was going to be there. It isn't long before we see Cheryl and Jason up to something. Cheryl stands up for Dilton as Reggie is roughing him up at his locker. Much to his surprise, Cheryl then flirts with Dilton a bit and suggests he should be a little more confidant, because of course... girls love a guy with confidence. Then we see Jughead trying to talk his way out of not turning in his term paper to Mrs Grundy. She is not buying his excuse that his computer crashed and he lost his paper, until Jason Blossom shows up. He vouched for Jughead and talked her into extending his due date over the weekend. When Jughead asks why he did that, Jason simply says "Lets just say you owe me one." The Blossoms head home to get ready for their party. They then head to the basement to see their parents participating in a candlelight ritual around a pentagram. They give them a "Hi Mom and Dad!" like they walked in on them preparing family dinner. I guess satanic rituals are commonplace at the Blossom Mansion. Their parents do elude in their exchange that only one of them is going to be the antichrist, not both. That should make things interesting later. It also sounds like the reason Cheryl and Jason were being nice was to incite Dilton and Jughead to the party for nefarious reasons. At the party the Blossoms get Moose, Dilton, Betty, Veronica, and Archie into a game of truth or dare that gets all those involved a little uncomfortable. Betty, being a goody two shoe, has had enough and storms off resulting in the end of the game. Jason, much to his disappointment, realizes that Jughead is not in attendance. He gets over it and turns his attention to Ethel. The issue wraps up with Cheryl. She was successful in luring Dilton to the party. She takes a flustered Dilton by the hand for a walk on their property. They enter a clearing and what does Dilton see? No, not a candle lit blanket welcoming him to Pound Town... its Reggie. Yes, his bully from earlier. Tied to a tree, gagged and surrounded by a pentagram. Cheryl hands Dilton a knife, looks him in the eyes and says, "I dare ya." Takeaway
If you are fan of Riverdale, you'll love this book. If not, you might think its missing something. So, for me... yes, I dug it. READ IT! -CBD
