Yeah... two weeks in a row. Crazy, right? I can tell by the almost double digit page views that I got from last week's post, that you guys are hungry to hear more from us. Ask and you shall receive.
Tom Taylor has to be having the most fun right now... with all of the DCeased stuff and dropping Injustice: Zero Year on us. He is getting to do all the best things with all the best characters at DC. None of it in continuity - so he can do what whatever he wants to whoever he wants... and that he does. On to the review... and as always, spoilers ahead.

Still don't know how I feel about DC releasing books on Tuesday, but this is the crazy comics world we live in now. Who else is loving everything Tom Taylor is involved in right now? Here are our picks for the week of 8/5/20. DCeased: Dead Planet #2 - DC ComicsThe sequel to the bestselling miniseries continues! The Justice League is trapped on Earth, and they've discovered that life still survives on this dead planet! Survival is precarious, though—and with billions of infected still roaming the surface, death lies around every corner. But, it isn't just the anti-living our heroes have to worry about, because John Constantine, Swamp Thing, and Zatanna are about to discover another evil growing... Undiscovered Country #7 - Image Comics"UNITY," Part One The smash hit series written by New York Times bestselling writers SCOTT SNYDER (WYTCHES, AD: AFTER DEATH) and CHARES SOULE (CURSE WORDS, the forthcoming novel Anyone) with art by GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (The Amazing Spider-Man, Darth Vader, Hellblazer), newcomer LEONARDO MARCELLO GRASSI, and Eisner-award winning colorist MATT WILSON (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, PAPER GIRLS) continues! After barely escaping the deadly clutches of the Destiny Man, the expedition team has crossed over into the strange new zone of "Unity"—a futuristic world of gleaming technology and artificial intelligence. But will it be a safe haven for our heroes, or are they destined to be absorbed into the hive mind?! Deadpool #6 - Marvel ComicsDEADPOOL INVADES THE X-MEN! When the X-Men won’t return Deadpool’s calls for a Krakoa portal on Monster Island, Wade decides to drop by for a visit. Apparently, the new X-Men home isn’t taking visitors. RUDE. It’s an entire nation of biological weapons and mutant warriors versus a merc with a mouth. GAME ON!
I know... It's been awhile. To be honest, this COVID thing has really gotten me discouraged from comics. With the delays and everything else, that drive to keep this thing going has been lacking. So, to all of you who are still fighting the good fight and keeping their posts going... I tip my hat to you.
However, with some possibilities of routines on the horizon (with school starting back... sorta), I am recommitting to you that I will be more discipline and keep this bad boy going. We had some good times right? This title came out a few weeks ago, but I thought this would be a good place to start. My family loves Teen Titans Go! and we really dig it when they take other worldly adventures ala The Night Begins To Shine. So, seeing the team take a dive into a D&D type world? For it! Se lets get going... Comics are back! Well, sorta... Check out this week's picks of new releases! The Ludocrats #1 - Image ComicsThe Ludocrats! The aristocrats of ludicrous! A collision of the ornate fantasy of Dune and an M-rated Asterix & Obelix! Baron Otto Von Hades and Professor Hades Zero-K are here, and they're going to save us all have a nice time. KIERON GILLEN (DIE, THE WICKED + THE DIVINE) and JIM ROSSIGNOL (Sir, You Are Being Hunted) write! JEFF STOKELY (The Spire) draws! TAMRA BONVILLAIN (Once & Future) colors! Clayton Cowles (BITTER ROOT, DIE) letters! The universe screams in pleasure, writhing, finally satisfied, complete, joyous! Year Zero #1 - AWA StudiosBen Percy (Wolverine) and Ramon Rosanas (Star Wars: Age of Resistance) team up to present an epic tale that offers a global look at the Zombie Apocalypse. A Japanese hitman, a Mexican street urchin, an Afghan military aide, a Polar research scientist, a Midwestern American survivalist – five survivors of a horrific global epidemic who must draw upon their unique skills and deepest instincts to navigate a world of shambling dead. Year Zero wrestles with the weighty moral and theological questions posed by the pandemic and investigates its cause and possible cure. DCeased: Hope At World's End #1The Anti-Life Equation has infected over a billion people on Earth. Heroes and villains have fallen. In the immediate aftermath of the destruction of Metropolis, Superman and Wonder Woman spearhead a plan to try to stem the tide of infection, preserve and protect survivors, and develop a plan for what’s next. In the Earth’s darkest hour heroes will bring hope!
Well there you have it folks! We are getting closer to somewhat of a normal schedule of releases. Stay home and read comics! -CBD I promise I won't be just doing DC Digital First book reviews, but they have just been so much fun to read during quarantine. Yes, the stories are pretty quick and straightforward, but they remind me of the magic that was in the issues I read as a kid that were the same. Also, the cover and preview hooked me... Wonder Woman maybe fighting a Yeti? Yes.. very much down for that!
So, here we go. As always SPOILERS ahead! Have I told you that I love Swamp Thing? I loved the old movies, the animated series, and even the live action TV show from the 90s. There is just something about a monster out to save the day that is just so compelling.
Again, DC is coming out with these Digital First issues from their Walmart big book series and this issue is the Sunday release issue. So, let's dive into this swampy issue... SPOILERS coming! As I have mentioned before, DC has made the move to make more content available digitally through these DC Digital Firsts. I love this move. They aren't technically new books... these stories were previously found in the DC Giant stories available at Walmart.
Nonetheless... I am pretty pumped to get DC content coming out daily and at a great price. $.99 ($.84 if you are a Comixology Unlimited subscriber). The Monday through Sunday lineup is as followed: Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Batman: Gotham Nights, Wonder Woman: Agent of Peace, Aquaman: Deep Dives, Flash: Fastest Man Alive, DC Super Hero Girls: Infinite Frenemies, Swamp Thing: New Roots. So let's take a look at this quick rip roaring classic Superman adventure.... as always, SPOILERS ahead! Still no new print comics today. However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon as DC has announced some new distribution dates soon. Also, in a great move by DC, they are releasing digital first books coming out 7 days a week at $.99 a pop! So there is content to be had out there. There ya go folks... stay healthy, stay home, and read comics! -CBD With the big boys not releasing books right now, it is an awesome time to check out some indie publishers and some of the goodies they have coming out. Let me tell you... this one is a gem. Our friends over at Magnetic Press let us take a whole look at GenPet. Before we get into our NON SPOILER-ish review, I recommend you take a look at at their titles. They've got not only interesting stories, incredible art, but they do a really good job categorizing their books by age groups... from kid friendly books all the way to mature books. Today's comics to tend to be more adult focused, so its nice to have some offerings for the question we often get "What books would be good for my kids to read?" It is also a good time to check them out too because they are having a big Re-Opening Sale on their webstore right now. Check it out. Now lets get on with the review. Just a friendly reminder... this one will actually be a non spoiler-ish review unlike most we do. More than a Boy and his Dog This story was a page turning 'boy and his dog' adventure that was original and refreshing. I am not super familiar with either creator, but I assume they had a blast putting this story together. Damian put together a story that was fast paced but not at the sacrifice of character development. The only knock for me was that there were a couple of transitions that were tough to follow, but nothing major. Alex Fuentes... man, where have you been? The panels in this book I want blown up and put on my wall. The way he depicted a not so distant future China and New York, made you want to pay attention to every detail on the page. Also, the way he used lighting to help set the emotion of the panels was very well done. At first look, this book appears to be geared towards younger readers because the characters seem a little more cartoonish. However, this book, I think, will appeal to a large age range of readers. Briefly, the story follows a young boy, Nat, in the year 2036 and his newest in designer pets, his GenPet, Niko and the trouble they get into. His dad has a troubled past, and therefore Niko, is not just a pet, but a bodyguard as well. Oh, did I mention that Niko starts off cute and cuddly and ends up... well, not so much? Anyway, Nat and Niko also meet a couple of interesting folks who have the only Italian restaurant in Little China that adds a whole other layer to this book that makes the story so much richer. I really just want to tell you everything that happens in this story, but I will refrain... because I think this is one worth picking up for yourself. Don't sleep on this one. I was very impressed from start to finish on this book. So much so, that I hope we see more adventures of Nat, Niko and crew. This story has a lot to offer: car chases, gun fights, monster cage fighting (yeah, you read that right) and even a little puppy love romance all taking place in and out of the boroughs of futuristic City That Never Sleeps. Again, I cannot say enough about Alex Fuentes and his art for this book. This style isn't something I normally gravitate to, but it only took a couple of pages before I was all in on it.
Now is the time to go check out other publishers and what they have to offer. I think the gang over at Magnetic Press is doing some great things and this little gem is for sure one of them. Pick it up. 4 out of 5 stars. -CBD |
