Ok, I want to be honest. DC has not been my favorite recently. All the Metal stuff was cool for a little event, but when they chose to turn it into a line wide event that went on for what seems years, it just wasn't for me.
There were glimmers of hope though for me with DC. I loved the DCeased books, Justice League Dark has been a favorite, and a couple of those Future State titles were a lot of fun. So, when I knew Infinite Frontier was coming up, I told myself I would jump on. So far so good. So, let's take a look at both Justice League #59 and also the new backup story featuring Justice League Dark. As always... SPOILERS AHEAD!

It was announced not too long ago that Zack Snyder's Justice League will come out in one long 4 hour cut versus a mini series. I for one think that is a big mistake. Imagine a month long event versus a one day drop. Lots to think about.
So, let's take a look at why it should be a mini series. Future State is rolling on. Some books have been great, others have been... interesting. I really enjoyed last week's Justice League and Justice League Dark. I am a big Shazam fan, so this was a book I was excited to read. What elseworld future is in store for Billy? Let's find out!
On to the spoiler review! Hey Comic Book Dads Family! Lots of good books this week on New Comic Book Day. Of course Future State is still in full swing and King in Black is going strong over at Marvel. Some indie books caught our eyes as well. So here you go... our pull list for the week. Whats on yours? Future State: Shazam! #1 - DC ComicsNo one’s seen Billy Batson in years-not since the incident known as the Final Battle of Titans Island. Now leading a small band of heroes, even his allies have begun to ask who’s controlling Earth’s Mightiest Mortal. In a story set years after the events of Future State: Teen Titans, learn the truth behind the sacrifice Billy made to imprison an ultimate evil even he couldn’t destroy. I Breathed A Body #1 - AfterShock ComicsAfterShock Comics’ latest series centers around the dangers posed by social media and the internet — and, given that this is a horror series, those dangers are not exactly what audiences might be expecting. I Breathed A Body is, according to writer Zac Thompson, “a supernatural horror book set in Silicon Valley about the voyeurism of violence. Thanks to social media, we’ve become prepared to see death and despair at any moment. Modern social networks are a relentless barrage of provocative content designed to keep us outraged, engaged, and fearful. This book is an indictment of the Big Tech companies who engender and profit from this vitriolic environment.” Future State: Superman: Worlds of War #1 - DC ComicsThis monumental Future State title features four big stories! First, Clark Kent is gone, leaving a Superman-shaped hole behind. People gather in Smallville to celebrate their hero, little realizing that he is across the galaxy helping others. Superman has gone to Warworld, where he fights as a gladiator in the deadly pits of Mongul. But this is Superman we’re talking about-and his idea of a victory does not line up with the expectations of Mongul’s hordes!
Meanwhile, on the other side of Warworld, other agents are at work, struggling for a better life. Shilo Norman, the man known as Mister Miracle, has ridden a Boom Tube across the cosmos from Metropolis to finds himself at odds with an entire planet! At the same time, Midnighter, the greatest fighter from Earth, is punching his way through a whole mess of trouble. He’s on the hunt for a new energy source deadlier than Kryptonite. His goal: to shut it down before it gets unleashed on an unsuspecting universe. On top of that, the Black Racer, a girl raised in the slums of Warworld to be one of its top competitors, turns betrayal into a crusade to fight for the freedom of others like her. Well, there are our picks of the week! We want to hear what you think of these books and other books on your pull list. Sound off in the comments! -CBD I am sure this will just be one of the many reviews of a Future State book that will be filling the web this week. I really wanted to talk about Crossover or even the Death Metal finale, but this book had all the vibes I was hoping for. So, I just couldn't pass it up.
From what I understand... Future State is what the rumored 5G was going to be. Age out all the old heroes and replace them with new, hip ones. I think Future State works out much better. It is more of a multiverse of Elseworld books about possible futures. Coming at them from that perspective makes them easier to take in for sure. While fun, I don't think I would have been thrilled if these were the ongoing titles for DC. Of course, I am sure the titles that sell well, will find a way to stick around in main continuity. I want to keep the summary a little short, as I think this is a title you really need to pick up and don't want to spoil too much. Anyway, on with the review! I saw a meme the other day that was a still from Goodfellas when Tommy Devito (Joe Pesci) is walking into the room thinking he was going to be "made" only to be shot in the back of the head (oops... sorry if that was spoilers). Then the text of the meme said "Walking into 2021 like..."
While I laughed, I am hopeful for 2021 in general. In our little corner of the world, I think there are lots to be hopeful for when it comes to all things comics-related. DC has Infinite Frontier coming, we have Zach Snyder's Justice League soon, and not to mention Suicide Squad. Don't get me started for the hype I have for WandaVision. Yes, some movies will be delayed, but things still look like they will happen. I do think we will be eating good in our area. Speaking of eating good... how can you not be happy that the classic Super Sons are back?! When I saw Tomasi was bringing back these versions of Jon and Damian, I do believe my tweet had lots of emojis. So, let's take a look at chapter 3 and talk about the goodness within. Here we go! Thanksgiving was a little different this year. We opted not to go see extended family and stayed home, ordered pizza, and put up Christmas decorations. Here's hoping we can do a "Thanksgiving" in the Spring!
I wanted to go with something besides the big two this week. The title of this one caught my eye. I love Godzilla and all things kaiju, so I thought this was worth rolling the dice on. So, lets get to it... spoilers ahead! Its New Comic Book Day! Lots of great books this week we are excited about. Check out our top three picks for the week. What books are on your pull list? Sea of Sorrows #1 - IDWDeep sea adventure with a horrific twist! From the creative team behind last year's hit horror series, ROAD OF BONES, comes an all-new tale of bone-chilling terror! In the aftermath of the Great War, the North Atlantic is ripe for plunder by independent salvage crews. When a former naval officer hires the SS Vagabond, he leads the ship to a sunken U-boat, and a fortune in gold. Tensions mount as the crew prepares to double cross each other, but the darkness of the ocean floor holds deeper terrors than any of them have bargained for! Plunge headfirst into the icy waters of dread with another historic tale of terror from writer Rich Douek, and artist Alex Cormack. Something is Killing the Children #12 - BOOM! StudiosDark Nights: Death Metal #5 - DC ComicsThe Darkest Knight has won. With absolute power at the villain’s fingertips, Wonder Woman and the rest of the DC heroes are nothing to him. As the Darkest Knight turns his sights to his true goal, remaking the Multiverse in his image, can Earth’s heroes rally together to make a last stand?
There they are folks. Honorable mention goes to Aquaman #65 as that run wraps up. Obviously with Endless Winter and Future State coming along with lots of DC titles "ending," it will be interesting to see what happens with DC in the new year. What books are on your pull list? -CBD Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know it's another review of the this book. I had some other things in mind. However, a buddy said I had to check out this issue and I had to come back to it.
Not going to lie, it was great to see Superman and Batman take on their evil counterparts and the Batman Who Laughs wasn't in it! Anyway... lets get on with the spoiler review! Oh Donny Cates. You know how to write a fun book. This one looks like it will be quite the adventure.
A friend asked me if I liked the book and what it was about. I didn't want to spoil it for him. So, I said it was like Fahrenheit 451 meets your favorite Marvel or DC super summer event. That description is assuming quite a bit.. but I think it will be fair moving forward (I hope). Also, the reason I put up these reviews on a Sunday for a book that came out several days ago... I am not looking to be the first one to break a review, rather I want to help you consider something you may have missed and go give it a look. Another is waiting a few days makes me feel better about not possibly spoiling a book for someone before they even had a chance to buy it. Yet another reason... Sunday nights are really the only night I have to do these. You know, dad life and all. Anyway, on to the SPOILER review! |
