Howdy comic book fam! I know it has been a long time, but we are back! Before we get on to the review, I wanted to just let you know why we've been gone so long... Honestly, it's just been life. When this blog started, it was a couple of dads talking about comics. Now, it's just me. With family life, work, and starting my MBA, working on this blog and being plugged into the comic book community has been low on my list. I miss it though! So, I am back at it.
Right now, it's just comic book dad, but I hope that can change. If you are a dad and want to contribute to this blog - head over to the CONTACT page, I would love to hear from you. Now, onto the review! As always, spoilers ahead. Sorry for being MIA the past couple of weeks. Our weekends have been super busy and posting to this blog kept getting further and further down the list. But huzzah... we are back to talk about Wonder Girl #1!
The Future State run of Yara was a lot of fun and the art was incredible. So, we have been waiting since finishing those to get our hands on this issue. Let's dive in... and as always SPOILERS ahead! It was a light week of books. I knew this one was coming after hearing a Joshua Williamson interview a couple months back. So, while, like many others, Damian hasn't always been my favorite Robin, I do love Williamson's work and I trust him to do some crazy stuff with Damian.
You know what? I take it back. While Damian is an entitled brat, he is the great ying to many yangs. To Batman, the Robins, of the past, and of course Jonathan Kent. Who doesn't love Super Sons am I right? So, let's take a look and see this newest adventure of Damian in Robin #1. As always, SPOILERS ahead. We are still pretty new to the comic book review/community, and have only gotten our hands on a couple of advanced copies of books. So, when Henry Barajas reached out regarding Helm Greycastle, we were all in!
Being Latinx myself, when Henry said that this series that he is going "to share some Mesoamerican history while mixing it with swords and sorcery," I was all over this. Like him, I wasn't raised knowing a ton of history about the indigenous people from my family's heritage. So, to see the way he used Aztec warriors and gods... it was truly great to see in a comic! So, let's take a look at the first issue of what looks to be an epic adventure of D&D colliding with Aztec Gods! Ok, we know that pretty much everything Tom Taylor touches at DC turns to gold. From Injustice to DCeased, he has been providing non stop epicness when he gets to go off continuity and have some fun with some of our favorite characters.
So, when I heard he was doing this Batman mini, I had to pick it up. Also, having Batman get the Andy Kubert treatment... yes please! Let's get to the review. As always, SPOILERS ahead. Man... it was a light week of books. I thought about finally jumping into Batman, but with the summary talking about Ghost-Maker and the Unsanity Collective gang. Sorry, I'll pass. If you can convince me otherwise, please do.
I read Suicide Squad #1 and it was promising. So, I thought, let's give #2 a shot. Let's see what Amanda Waller's latest crew is up to. As always... SPOILERS ahead. Woohoo! It's new comic book day (well DAYS since DC books came out yesterday) and we wanted to share the books we are excited about this week. We usually just pick 3, but when we saw King In Black was on its final issue... we had to rejoice! I feel like the meme from Titanic would be appropriate when thinking about how long this event feels like it's been going - it's been 84 years... It has been a fun event, but man, has it felt like a long one! Anyway, here are our picks this week. What's on your pull list? King In Black #5 - Marvel ComicsWHAT’S A GOD TO A NONBELIEVER? Nocterra #2 - Image Comics“FULL THROTTLE DARK,” Part Two Val brings her passengers to their first truckstop—the Neon Grove! But with her brother getting worse by the minute, and dark forces in hot pursuit, our ferryman finds herself faced with a grave decision. Batman #107 - DC ComicsTensions are sky-high in Gotham City following the events at Arkham Asylum, and public opinion and unrest are starting to boil over. The Dark Knight has his hands full juggling the investigation of the reappearance of an old enemy and the rise of a new gang in Gotham called the Unsanity Collective...Gotham City is getting more dangerous by the minute! Plus, in part one of “Legend of the Ghost-Maker,” James Tynion IV and Ricardo Lopez Ortiz tell the most insane tale of action and adventure featuring Batman’s frenemy Ghost-Maker! This one is not to be missed! Green Lantern #1 - DC ComicsAs this new Green Lantern series begins, the newly formed United Planets and the Guardians of the Universe hold an intergalactic summit to decide who can best serve and protect the cosmos from danger. With the majority of Green Lanterns called back to Oa, John Stewart arrives alongside Teen Lantern Keli Quintela, whose powerful gauntlet could be one of the most powerful and unstable weapons in the universe. With the entire landscape of the universe in flux, is this the end of the Green Lantern Corps...or a new beginning?
Well, there they are folks. Lots a great books this week. Again, don't be shy - let us know what's on your pull list this week! -CBD What... a Marvel book?! Yes, believe it or not I do actually read Marvel books too. I know about 80% of things I cover here are DC related, I still dig Marvel too. I have just grown up loving DC books, so those are just where I feel more at home.
However, when you see good old horse face Thor, Beta Ray Bill on the same cover with Fin Fang Foom... how can you pass that up? So, let's take a look at Beta Ray Bill #1! I told myself I would give Infinite Frontier and honest shake. So, I spun the wheel of Infinite Frontier books to review, and Harley Quinn won. I haven't been keeping up with her exploits since really before all the Metal stuff was going on.
So, needless to say, there were some things that were surprising for me. Were they good surprises or bad ones? Let's find out! As always, SPOILERS ahead. |
